SKIP JAMES She Lyin'

After a thirty-year exile, Skip James burst back on the blues scene in 1964. After making several electrifying recordings in 1931, James fell on hard times and turned to other work to survive. This recording, made in 1964, testifies to James' transforming art as he uses changes in tempo, strange stops and starts, unusual harmonic shifts, and musical references that range from field chants to spirituals to create a mysterious and occasionally sinister expression of emotion. One of the most soulful of blues players, with his trademark vocal style that cascades from eerie falsettos to gruff hollers, James remains difficult to define. But meeting him on his own plane on this CD is a deeply moving listening experience.

"An exquisite piece of country blues history by this Delta genius." - Blues Review
